[18:07]<Quantos> Merry Christmas you guys
[18:07]<Quantos> Belated but better late than never eh :D
[18:07]<@BC_Programming> thx
[18:07]<Quantos> Did you get a good haul?
[18:07]<@BC_Programming> I got really drunk
[18:07]<Quantos> LOL
[18:08]<@BC_Programming> for gifts I got a new sweater and that was it, I gave a lot more stuff really
[18:08]<Quantos> That's a great way to get out of shopping today
[18:08]<@BC_Programming> PS Vita and a new mouse for my brother, several World War Books and a book on Medals for my stepdad, and a coffee maker and a tablet for my mom
[18:08]<Quantos> I got a really great new tea infuser, works way better than that little ball with holes in it, and a crapload of new flavored herbal teas
[18:09]<Quantos> Oh wow, you went all out
[18:09]<Quantos> It's fun to do that though
[18:09]<@BC_Programming> I bought most of it in November so I was ahead
[18:09]<Quantos> Yeah, then you miss the phony sales too
[18:10]<@BC_Programming> yep that too
[18:11]<Quantos> I bought my best friend a Denver Bronco's piggy bank, another friend got a new down comforter, and I got the girls a new remote carstarter
[18:11]<@BC_Programming> My cousin and his girlfriend came up from Victoria
[18:11]<Quantos> I can't believe how expensive that NFL gear is, geez, three little letters and the price goes through the roof
[18:11]<@BC_Programming> They seemed bored so I entertained them by getting drunk off my ass
[18:11]<Quantos> Sweet
[18:12]<Quantos> Yeap, that's how to entertain ;)
[18:12]<@BC_Programming> It has been 15 hours and I still feel imbibed
[18:12]<Quantos> How long of a drive is it from Victoria to there?
[18:12]<Quantos> 6 hours?
[18:12]<@BC_Programming> 2 hours or therabouts
[18:13]<Quantos> Oh, I thought you were a bit farther north than that
[18:13]<@BC_Programming> Not too long
[18:13]<@BC_Programming> the original plan was for my Uncle to come up as well but he died a few weeks ago :(
[18:13]<Quantos> I'm sorry to hear that man
[18:14]<@BC_Programming> I've tried not to think about it too much...
[18:15]<@BC_Programming> It also is a shitty deal for my cousin since both his parents are gone now
[18:19]<Quantos> Ah, that's not good. One of the young guys that came by yesterday had his 1 year anniversary of his dad dying. It wasn't a good day for him - but he still managed to have some fun and get a couple of drinks into him
[18:21]<@BC_Programming> His Mom died 5 years ago. I don't know the details but it had something to do with her diabetes (which was not adult onset but rather the kind you are born with). His Dad/My Uncle has had epilepsy all his life and he died due to respiratory distress after a Grand Mal
[18:23]<Quantos> Oh that's tragic. It's completely different when you're expecting it
[18:23]<Quantos> At least my parents weren't taken by surprise
[18:24]<+camerongray> haha, hey BC_Programming & Quantos
[18:24]<@BC_Programming> Hey cameron
[18:24]<Quantos> Heya buddy
[18:24]<Quantos> Got that mess of whoosits cleaned up yet?
[18:24]<+camerongray> haha, yep, and it works!
[18:25]<Quantos> (technical jargon)
[18:25]<Quantos> Cool
[18:25]<+camerongray> Drunk BC sounds really amusing actually
[18:25]<Quantos> But I've still never seen how the remote control fit in there
[18:25]<+camerongray> I was watching TV :P
[18:26]<Quantos> Yeah, just being a smartass ;)
[18:26]<Quantos> It comes natural to me
[18:26]<+camerongray> Context for BC_Programming: http://imgur.com/z0tGlQc
[18:26]<+camerongray> How I spent boxing day
[18:27]<@BC_Programming> but today is boxing day
[18:27]<@BC_Programming> oh.... right, several hours ahead
[18:27]<+camerongray> "How I've spent boxing day so far"
[18:27]<+camerongray> :P
[18:28]<+camerongray> Had a nasty mark on my laptop palmrest, got a new one for Christmas
[18:28]<@BC_Programming> what an oddly specific gift
[18:28]<+camerongray> Then realised that the entire laptop is built on top of the part I needed to replace so it had to come totally apart
[18:28]<+camerongray> That, an SSD and a red escape key :P
[18:28]<+camerongray> And some clothes.etc
[18:28]<Quantos> Yeah, some laptops aren't really put together in a way that makes sense eh?
[18:28]<+camerongray> Yep
[18:28]<Quantos> Oh, which SSD?
[18:29]<+camerongray> Although it's pretty impressively take-apart-able for what is technically an Ultrabook
[18:29]<+camerongray> Also, WIndows 8 with BIng has made some crazy cheap machines: http://www.tesco.com/direct/acer-aspire-es1-111m-116-laptop-intel-celeron-2gb-ram-32gb-ssd-black/336-9409.prd?pageLevel=&skuId=336-9409
[18:29]<+camerongray> I mean, the spec is pretty crap but for a basic secondary machine that's insane
[18:30]<Quantos> Unreal, that's under $200
[18:30]<Quantos> Barely, but almost everyone can afford a laptop, well except for the poor
[18:31]<+camerongray> Yeah, think my flatmate is going to get one - He already has a desktop so only needs his laptop for taking notes - His current one is a 15" Toshiba with a Core 2 Duo so is really bulky
[18:31]<+camerongray> I can think of certain people in CH who will get really annoyed at it :P
[18:31]<+camerongray> "Why would you ever want that" "It's junk".etc
[18:32]<Quantos> Hmm, I have a d620, core2duo, it doesn't seem that bulky - but I'm comparing it to my Toshiba Qosmio that I had
[18:32]<Quantos> Well, it is junk, but at that price it's what you expect
[18:32]<+camerongray> Yeah
[18:32]<+camerongray> But it does have a place
[18:32]<Quantos> Moreso than a tablet
[18:33]<+camerongray> I had to laugh when Patio was claiming that there was no place for a Celeron
[18:33]<Quantos> I still can't get the damn e-books to work on that tablet
[18:33]<+camerongray> I of all people have two Celerons that I use daily
[18:33]<@BC_Programming> I'm saving up for a new laptop, but it is going to be a nice one to replace my L300
[18:33]<Quantos> I still have a celeron
[18:33]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah, think that's what my flatemate has, L300
[18:33]<Quantos> Do you know what you're going to get yet BC?
[18:33]<@BC_Programming> Current one is T3200 Dual Core 4GB RAM
[18:34]<@BC_Programming> Not sure
[18:34]<+camerongray> The D620 is pretty nice yeah, I have one at my feet right now
[18:34]<@BC_Programming> thinking in the 1500-2000 dollar range
[18:34]<+camerongray> I use it as a knock around machine and for serial console stuff as it has a serial port
[18:34]<+camerongray> Of course I leant my friend my old Inspiron 1545 after his laptop died and gave him my only Dell charger so can't use the D620 ATM
[18:35]<Quantos> Yeap, it replaced my Compaq n6000 I think it was
[18:35]<Quantos> Half the keys didn't work, the USB ports were all fried
[18:35]<+camerongray> BC_Programming: What are you looking at? Could get a nice ThinkPad or Latitude for that
[18:36]<@BC_Programming> Will likely be from Tigerdirect
[18:36]<@BC_Programming> Seems to get a nice powerful system it has to be classed as a "Gaming" laptop
[18:36]<Quantos> Oh, so it will be orange and black?
[18:36]<@BC_Programming> hah
[18:37]<Quantos> Yeah, that was exceptionally lame, even from me
[18:37]<+camerongray> BC_Programming: Look at the business ones, you won't get big graphics cards but you can get good CPUs without tacky gaming stuff
[18:38]<+camerongray> For a lot of power, the ThinkPad W540 is really nice
[18:38]<+camerongray> Although I'd be inclined to wait for the next generation, There is word (not sure if true, think it is) that the new version gets physical trackpoint buttons again
[18:39]<Quantos> That would be so nice to get those back
[18:39]<@BC_Programming> http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9512647&CatId=3998
[18:40]<Quantos> Great choice, I love the Y50
[18:40]<+camerongray> Yeah, that is a good machine
[18:40]<@BC_Programming> jeez 3840 x 2160 wtf
[18:40]<+camerongray> But it is a bit gamery :P
[18:40]<Quantos> Really nice machine
[18:40]<@BC_Programming> yeah they don't really have a business thing
[18:40]<+camerongray> They do a 3k W540 but it's expensive
[18:40]<Quantos> Yeah, but not a flashy paintjob or chasis at least
[18:41]<@BC_Programming> 3840 x 2160 is higher than my desktop monitor resolution
[18:41]<@BC_Programming> I'm tempted to buy it now :/
[18:41]<+camerongray> lol
[18:41]<Quantos> That's an insane resolution for a laptop
[18:41]<+camerongray> I really would go for a business one but that's just me
[18:41]<+camerongray> I'm always scared I break consumer ones
[18:42]<Quantos> The 80" Panasonic teles are only 1080p
[18:42]<@BC_Programming> in tigerdirect they don't really have a "business" category
[18:42]<@BC_Programming> they have a laptop
[18:42]<+camerongray> Think have some ThinkPads and Dell Precisions/Latitudes
[18:42]<@BC_Programming> laptop category but they seem to be for the cheaper systems
[18:42]<+camerongray> Their search is just totally broken
[18:43]<+camerongray> "Precision" and "Latitude" works in the search but for ThinkPads you need to search for an actual model such as "W540"
[18:44]<Quantos> I can't deal with tigerdirect. There's an ultra cheap store in town called GiantTiger that just sux. Nothing but crap, and I can't seem to separate the two in my mind
[18:44]<@BC_Programming> heh
[18:45]<@BC_Programming> LIke I say I'm tempted to pull the trigger on that one now but I think I'll wait until my liver has finished eliminating all the alcohol, I can still feel it
[18:46]<@BC_Programming> Better to make decisions like that when I know I'm thinking straight :P
[18:46]<+camerongray> lol
[18:47]<+camerongray> I'm both exicted and scared for the new line of ThinkPads
[18:47]<+camerongray> As in, they may be bringing the buttons back which would pretty much force me to buy one but they could also make them worse
[18:47]<Quantos> Scared of a laptop?
[18:47]<+camerongray> Have you seen what they did to the X1 Carbon's keyboard?
[18:47]<Quantos> Cam, why so scared? The new thinkpad is chasing me....
[18:48]<Quantos> Yeah, it was a complete injustice to a nice machine
[18:48]<+camerongray> "Lets make the keyboard better" - http://recodetech.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/x1-carbon-keyboard.png?w=640
[18:48]<+camerongray> At least if they are going back on that and putting trackpoint buttons back it shows they must listen to customers
[18:48]<Quantos> And I hate those tits in the middle of the board
[18:48]<@BC_Programming> uegh
[18:48] * +camerongray recoils at Quantos's last statement
[18:48]<+camerongray> How dare you insult my TrackPoint :P
[18:48]<@BC_Programming> Trackpoint++ but weird layout --
[18:49]<Quantos> LOL
[18:49]<+camerongray> I prefer the term "Nipple"
[18:49]<@BC_Programming> At least toshiba is consistent in their weird layout- my 440CDX from 1995 has nearly the same layout as my L300
[18:50] * Nat (nathan@mib-9777B5D6.lightspeed.irvnca.sbcglobal.net) has joined #glitchpc
[18:50]<@BC_Programming> hmm here's another
[18:50]<@BC_Programming> http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9348450&CatId=4935
[18:50]<@BC_Programming> Touch Screen would be nice... but lower resolution
[18:50]<+camerongray> Hmm, do you really need something massive and bulky though? What are you using it for?
[18:50]<Quantos> I hate touch screens
[18:50]<@BC_Programming> well right now I have to compile some programs on my laptop
[18:50]<Quantos> I've been smacking people for decades to keep their fingers off of my monitor
[18:51]<Quantos> I absolutely detest fingerprints
[18:51]<@BC_Programming> though actually that is because my desktop has non-standard DPI
[18:51]<@BC_Programming> and if I get a high-res laptop I'd have the same issue
[18:51]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah
[18:52]<+camerongray> *cough* http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8856783&CatId=4935 :P
[18:52]<@BC_Programming> (some weird windows forms bug causes the program to size the WIndow incorrectly if I compile it on my desktop)
[18:52]<+camerongray> *cough* real laptop *cough* :D
[18:52]<+camerongray> Yeah, WIndows's font scaling sucks
[18:52]<@BC_Programming> reminds me of my 770CDX
[18:52]<@BC_Programming> No the font scaling works great, the problem is that Windows Forms is a piece of crap
[18:53]<Quantos> Hey, what does the Q in the CPU model represent?
[18:53] * Nat (nathan@mib-9777B5D6.lightspeed.irvnca.sbcglobal.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 180 seconds)
[18:53]<+camerongray> Quad Core
[18:53]<@BC_Programming> Quad Core I imagine
[18:53]<+camerongray> Intel are confusing, their mobile i7s without a Q are dual core
[18:53]<Quantos> I thought that too, but aren't all i7's quad, or does it change with mobiles?
[18:53]<+camerongray> Intel's mobile naming is a total mess
[18:53]<Quantos> The answer beat the question :D
[18:54]<@BC_Programming> I don't get why that is more pricey than the other one?
[18:54]<+camerongray> The mobile i3, i5 and non-Q i7 are all dual core with HT
[18:54]<+camerongray> BC_Programming: You do pay a lot for it being a ThinkPad unforunately
[18:54]<@BC_Programming> aside from thickness and a more rugged design I suppose
[18:54]<+camerongray> But you cold throw it off a bridge and it would be fine
[18:55] * +camerongray recalls his drunk friend frisbeeing his T420 across a room at a party while saying "It's a ThinkPad"
[18:55]<+camerongray> Dell do great workstations too: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=9127759&CatId=4935
[18:55]<Quantos> I remember a salesman once showing off his 'indestructable laptop' I think it was intended for military. I seem to recall it being a Panasonic too. (This is back in '92)
[18:56]<@BC_Programming> Panasonic toughbook
[18:56]<+camerongray> haha yeah
[18:56]<Quantos> He dropped it on the floor and kicked it across the room
[18:56]<Quantos> But my god, the thing was massive
[18:56]<Quantos> Yeah, that's what it was called
[18:56]<+camerongray> Yeah, my friend has one of the old Pentium II ones
[18:56]<+camerongray> It is big :P
[18:57]<+camerongray> This is the same friend who is getting rid of tonnes of vintage PCs
[18:57]<+camerongray> You can guess who's flat is now filled with them
[18:57]<Quantos> Oh yeah, I remember you mentioning that, are you going to grab any?
[18:58]<Quantos> LOL, once again the answer precedes the question
[18:58]<+camerongray> Already have grabbed 3
[18:58]<Quantos> What'd you get?
[18:59]<+camerongray> So far - Acorn A7000+, Power Macintosh 8600/200, Sun SparcServer 5
[19:00]<+camerongray> BC_Programming: You mentioned you liked classic Mac OS
[19:00]<@BC_Programming> neat
[19:01]<+camerongray> Really happy with the Mac - I used them throughout nursery and Primary School so it brings back a lot of memories
[19:01]<+camerongray> And afer an unhealthy amount of Googling I found all the old games I used to play
[19:01]<Quantos> The 8600, is that the one with the DOS board, or is that the older 6200?
[19:01]<Quantos> I can't remember
[19:01]<+camerongray> Think they were optional but it does support them
[19:02]<Quantos> They were optional on one model, but I remember there was a model they were standard in too
[19:02]<+camerongray> Ahh, not this one then
[19:02]<Quantos> The Mac would run at top speed, the DOS board slowed it all right down to the speed of a 486DX2/66
[19:03]<Quantos> But you could run both at once
[19:03]<Quantos> I called it a space heater
[19:04]<@BC_Programming> Hmm no rush to get a new laptop I suppose, can always wait- they'll still be there in a few weeks after all :P
[19:05]<@BC_Programming> Also funny story I broke my speakers so had to buy new ones
[19:05]<Quantos> I've never regretted waiting for something
[19:05]<Quantos> Learned my lesson from buying that damned Qosmio
[19:05]<Quantos> It was an impulse buy, I don't make those anymore
[19:05]<@BC_Programming> I've had these Altec Lansing VS2140 2.1 Speakers for nearly a decade
[19:06]<@BC_Programming> but they have this annoying interference issue... so I thought I'd try to address that by lining the breakout volume control box with foil since it seemed to be what was picking up interference
[19:06]<@BC_Programming> and now it doesn't turn on lol
[19:07]<Quantos> I assume that you tried it again without the foil
[19:07]<@BC_Programming> yes
[19:07]<@BC_Programming> I must have shorted something I guess
[19:07]<Quantos> Homemade Faraday cage?
[19:07]<Quantos> That's too bad, the lansing's are a great line
[19:08]<@BC_Programming> I had been trying to block interference by sticking random crap around the control box like CDs/DVDs
[19:08]<Quantos> LOL
[19:08]<Quantos> I can almost visualize that
[19:09]<@BC_Programming> using some cheap ones I found in a closet until my new 2.1 speakers arrive on Monday
[19:09]<+camerongray> Such an interesting machine: http://imgur.com/a/viMV0
[19:09]<Quantos> Oh, what'd you get?
[19:09]<+camerongray> It even has composite video in and out
[19:10]<@BC_Programming> Logitech Z323
[19:10]<Quantos> Yeah, noticing that
[19:10]<Quantos> They were great for doing video with
[19:11]<+camerongray> Yeah
[19:11]<Quantos> I have an old G3 that still runs great, really fun to play with
[19:11]<+camerongray> I only really used them in school but hadn't used one for a very long time - Brought back a lot of memories
[19:11]<+camerongray> Drawing random pictures in Apple Works 5 :P
[19:11]<Quantos> HEehehehheh
[19:11]<@BC_Programming> The only Mac I think I've actually used was the original iMac
[19:11]<+camerongray> We had the original iMacs in school as well
[19:12]<Quantos> Yeah, I remember when they came out
[19:12]<+camerongray> Mostly them and a few mixed Power Macintoshes/Performas
[19:12]<+camerongray> The iMac G3 would just be too bulky for me to store
[19:12]<+camerongray> At least the towers can be put in a pile
[19:12]<Quantos> By the pantheon, I haven't heard of the Performa in a loooong time
[19:12]<Quantos> Yeah, I have mine on a end table working as a picture frame
[19:13]<Quantos> Does a great job, but portrait orientation images won't display right, I have to turn them manually on my Linux box and then put them on the G3
[19:14]<+camerongray> Ahh cool
[19:14]<+camerongray> My wardrobe is just full of them: http://imgur.com/ptYrEJx
[19:14]<Quantos> And it runs just fine without a keyboard and mouse
[19:14]<+camerongray> Imagine that with the Power Macintosh alongside
[19:14]<+camerongray> Then I have the XT set up in the corner because it's so cool and a Sun Ultra 5 under my desk for some reason
[19:15]<Quantos> You have craploads of space there, you should get some more
[19:15]<+camerongray> haha
[19:15]<+camerongray> I've got a SparcStation 10 coming - Just need to go and collect it
[19:15]<+camerongray> I only bother with ones that are interesting, cool or significant in some way
[19:16]<+camerongray> I wouldn't take an old p4 tower or anything :P
[19:16]<Quantos> What about the old Cyrix chipset, it was dead ass slow, but interesting
[19:16]<Quantos> I'd almost forgotten about that CPU
[19:17]<@BC_Programming> I had a Cyrix M-II
[19:17]<@BC_Programming> garbage
[19:17]<Quantos> Yeah, they were nothing
[19:17]<Quantos> Way below the AMD level of the day
[19:18]<+camerongray> None of them :(
[19:18]<@BC_Programming> iirc Cyrix was bought by VIA
[19:18]<+camerongray> Few 486s, one P3 (which I use for old games), my old Athlon PC (doesn't really count) the Power PC mac and then a bunch of SPARC
[19:18]<@BC_Programming> which continued for a bit with the VIA Samuel C3 or somesuch
[19:19]<@BC_Programming> though maybe VIA was in it separately
[19:20]<+camerongray> It's strange, I love new stuff and really old stuff but I can't be bothered with generally just "Old" PCs
[19:21]<+camerongray> Unlike VWestlife who is all "Old stuff is better" "They don't make things like they used to"
[19:21]<+camerongray> The old stuff makes you appreciate how reliable modern stuff is
[19:22]<Quantos> And how responsive it is
[19:22]<@BC_Programming> Yeah I unsubbed him after his ludicruously inaccurate POS video
[19:22]<@BC_Programming> POSReady video rather
[19:22]<+camerongray> I'm fine with his vintage stuff but yeah, that stuff is nonsense
[19:22]<+camerongray> The SPARCServer I have has a dead CMOS battery so it has forgotten it's serial and MAC address - To boot it you need to enter a series of commands to tell it them and then you can tell it to boot
[19:22]<+camerongray> All over the serial console
[19:23]<Quantos> Sweet
[19:23]<+camerongray> I need to resist the tempation to take all of the free machines my friend has
[19:23]<+camerongray> HIs flat is insane, I could literally spend days playing with everything
[19:23]<Quantos> No you don't, you have plenty of room
[19:24]<Quantos> Just tiptoe between them
[19:24]<Quantos> Stack them up like furniture
[19:24]<+camerongray> haha!
[19:24]<Quantos> Who needs a couch?
[19:25]<+camerongray> Put it this way, I went into his flat and saw this: http://imgur.com/8uDPByw
[19:25]<+camerongray> Turns out he saw a mouse so decided to make an Arduino controlled humane mouse trap: http://imgur.com/N9SJudg
[19:28]<+camerongray> I'm really trying to resist the urge to take one of the SunFire v120s we are getting rid of from Tardis
[19:29]<Quantos> I don't think I'm familiar with that one
[19:29]<+camerongray> 1U rackmount, from the early 2000s
[19:30]<Quantos> Wow, you guys really are in need of new gear
[19:30]<+camerongray> Oh no, we finally just replaced them
[19:30]<+camerongray> Now running on some nice 2009 or so Dells
[19:30]<Quantos> It's tempting to say ship one to me, but shipping would cost a fortune on that
[19:30]<+camerongray> Yeah, could probably buy one cheaper
[19:31]<Quantos> Especially international
[19:31]<+camerongray> We have 6 to get rid of
[19:31]<+camerongray> Most have homes amazingly
[19:31]<Quantos> And the power supplies aren't compatible anyway
[19:31]<Quantos> I'd have to wire up a pigtail
[19:31]<+camerongray> One is going to a CPAN developer to test it on SPARC which is pretty cool - It'll be getting a proper use!
[19:31]<Quantos> Nice
[19:32]<+camerongray> We shut off our last SPARC machine a few weeks ago
[19:32]<+camerongray> End of an era
[19:32]<Quantos> Yeah, that's sad in a way
[19:32]<Quantos> No idea why, but it is
[19:33]<+camerongray> We've been running SPARC for like 20 years
[19:41]<+camerongray> Of course we had to video the moment! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HSgp90hq4I
